Do you enjoy visiting art galleries? Or more of a live music enjoyer? What’s that? You’ll only attend Shrek raves and nothing else? Oh my bad, you said you’re a cinema fanatic. The good news is you can be any of these things and have a great time in Birmingham this week. Here are a few events you can look forward to this second week of February.
Black Is Beautiful Opening Reception at AEIVA (Thursday)
Kwame Brathwaite was a revolutionary photographer through the 1950s and 1960s. He also founded the African Jazz-Art Society & Studios, an artist collective that popularized sayings and ideas that combated the racism surrounding them. UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute of the Visual Arts (AEIVA) will be showing some of Brathwaite’s important works through March 25th, with the Grand Opening being this Thursday night.
Wax Fur, Nowhere Squares, Sick F*cks and Dree Leer at Saturn (Thursday)
Talk about an all-star Birmingham lineup. This one is nearly mind-blowing - and it’s free thanks to the Parachute Show series at Saturn! City favorites Wax Fur, Nowhere Squares, Sick F*cks, and Dree Leer are coming together to rock the city’s socks off on a Thursday night. You’re not going to want to miss this show!
Shrek Rave at Zydeco (Friday)
Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts. The Shrek Rave is about to land in Birmingham! The weather is looking nice and the people are ready to get their ogre dancing on. There’s a reason this was one of our most anticipated events in Birmingham, and the reason is that it’s a freaking Shrek rave. Be at Zydeco or develop a serious case of FOMO this Friday.
Everything Everywhere All At Once at Sidewalk Cinema (Friday - Sunday)
“Everything Everywhere All At Once” is the type of movie that we haven’t seen in a long time. The creative concept sparked a word-of-mouth campaign that was matched by critic reviews to become one of the most acclaimed movies in a long time. Even better, one of the now-famous Daniels directors is from Birmingham! You can once again watch this movie in a theater setting this weekend thanks to the fine folks at Sidewalk.
The Yellow Dandies - Iron City Grill (Saturday)
The Yellow Dandies are known for bringing great tunes and times to the people of Birmingham, and are prepared to do more of the same this Saturday on the Iron City Grill stage. Delicious food, tasty beverages, and fantastic tunes make for the perfect Magic City weekend.
