Birmingham is known as a golf lover’s town. The Magic City is the host of the Regions Tradition and has an impressive collection of beautiful courses about town including The Oaks, Highland Park, Roebuck, Greystone, and many more. But where does Birmingham rank amongst the very top cities when it comes to the best place for golf lovers? The golf grass enthusiasts at LawnStarter recently ranked the best areas for golfers in 2022, and the Magic City comes in with an impressive #14 ranking! We are the top Alabama city by a long shot with Montgomery coming in at #87, Mobile at #104, and Huntsville at #181.
The rankings used key determinants such as number of golf courses, weather, and access to golfing equipment to finalize their rankings of the nation’s largest 200 cities. Birmingham did particularly well in the Number of Preferred Courses (as determined by the Golf Tournament Association of America), where we ranked eighth overall! We were also #14 in public courses per 100,000 residents, #19 in total reviews for all courses, and #38 PGA golf coaches per 100,000 residents.
The official rankings also looked at venues like Uptown’s Topgolf facility as training spaces, which also doubles for quite a wonderful time with friends. Golf lovers in Birmingham probably aren’t surprised by the city’s top 15 ranking - and things only expand with a 30-minute drive in any direction from the greater metropolitan area. A feature that didn’t improve the rankings that would have boosted Birmingham even more is the availability of courses on college football Saturdays - when suddenly the best golfing day of the week also becomes the calmest time to go since everybody is distracted yelling “Roll Tide” or “War Eagle” at their television screen!
Birmingham loves it golf, and it’s great to get some recognition. We hope you're able to get out on the course and enjoy one of the country’s favorite pastimes soon!
