Inaugural Black Lens Film Week, February 14-20
Save the date for a chance to appreciate a collection of outstanding feature narrative and documentary films which will be highlighted and screened at Sidewalk Cinema. Each screening has been as a celebration of Black history within the film industry, and while we encourage you to check out all of the screenings, we’ve highlighted just a few for this exciting week to come!
Black Lens Double Feature: Justice Without Violence: The Montgomery Boycott and Fannie Lou Hamer: Stand Up
This special double feature showing includes Amanda Shaw Newsome’s Justice Without Violence: The Montgomery Boycott, for which she won the 2006 Southeast Regional Emmy Award. This documentary reminds us of America’s most important protests in ending bus segregation and is set to be shown alongside the screening of Fannie Lou Hamer: Stand Up. Hamer was an outspoken advocate for the Civil Rights Movement, and if you’re actively looking for new ways to become educated about topics which are still relevant today, this double feature is waiting for you. This is a free screening starts at 6:30 p.m. on February 15.
Citizen Ashe (2019)
Interested in sports and history? There’s something for everyone this week as filmmakers Rex Miller and Sam Pollard document African-American professional tennis player Arthur Ashe, as he became the first Black winner of a major men's singles championship as well as an important human rights and HIV activist. This fascinating and important documentary will be screening at 9:30 p.m. on February 19.
Oprah Winfrey: Fight For a Better Life (2021)
If you’re looking for something more recent, this impactful documentary style screening about the hardships faced by one of the most influential women in the United States sounds perfect for you. This screening offers a fascinating insight into Oprah’s successes as not only an entrepreneur and television personality, but also as one of the most compassionate, powerful, and engaging black women of our time. Tickets are available for either 3 p.m. February 19 or 5 p.m. February 20.
