The United Way of Central Alabama is turning 100 years old! Formed in 1923, Alabama’s primary United Way organization has been dedicated to providing an extensive selection of life-saving and altering services for those who need them. The wide range of available assistance ranges from crisis response and financial stability to education and creating healthier communities. The organization’s programs include Meals On Wheels, Veteran Services, assistance for senior citizens, and a 2-1-1 line for easy information on where to find help. Tens of thousands of Birmingham-area residents have received housing counseling, literacy support, and job skills training through these dedicated and well-funded endeavors.
For all the hard work that has been accomplished thanks to United Way of Central Alabama, it is only fitting that the organization celebrates with just as much fervor and gusto. Birmingham’s City Walk park, which has already played host to the World Games concerts and other massive Magic City moments, will be the location of the festive centennial celebration that will feature local favorites and national musicians taking the stage for a day of fun. The event takes place this Saturday, June 24th, from 3 to 8pm and is free to the public.
Featured acts include Moon Taxi, Act of Congress, Los Destakados Band, DJ Gap, The Zulu Connection, Good Vibez, Fly Dave and the Party Rockers, and Lynden Blake. Birmingham’s sports teams will also be well-represented at this event with the Barons, Bulls, Legion, Squadron, and Stallions all participating in fun activities throughout the day. If you’re worried that all this excitement and activity will build up a hunger, fret not. United Way is bringing some of the city’s most flavorful food trucks to ease these concerns. Trucks include A-Train, Berried By Crystal, Naughty But Nice Kettle Corn, Frozen Rooster, Hollywood Grill, Lil Bougie Foodie, Nawlins Style Po Boys, and Adored Sweets.
A day full of community, education, resources, and fun? Sounds like the perfect 100 year mark for United Way of Central Alabama!
