Unique finds for unique spaces. That’s the **Avondale Antiques** motto. The shop is located at **4301 3rd Avenue South**, just down the street from Avondale Park. After a quick drive by you may notice the pink plastic flamingos in the backyard poking their heads out at you or maybe the beautiful turquoise and orange antique chairs in the front. Either way, there is a sort of a sense of mystery that makes you wonder what else is in that little shop.

The **owner Fred Dyess** is enthusiastic. He pays meticulous attention to detail. After you spend a few minutes in the shop you start to become aware of the way each item is so carefully placed. Different corners of the shop are divided into sections such as kitchenware and living room furniture. However, the shop is ever-changing as Fred buys and sells antiques. He always has a plan in his head for where the next item will be placed. Lamps, chandeliers, mobiles and lights hang from the ceiling; Fred is very interested in lighting. He is also fond of mid-century modern, noting that he enjoys the clean, crisp and simple lines and scale that define this style.

Avondale Antiques has a friendly atmosphere. When you walk in to shop you become immersed, and almost lost in a way. Not because the shop is a giant warehouse, but because there is so much to see. Every square inch of the shop is piled high with vintage furnishings and knick-knacks with just enough space for you to slide by as you marvel at each item.

**FRED’S ADVICE**## Buy something that really calls out to you and can be used in various ways as you move. Moreover, find a piece that you can use creatively as you grow and transition through life. Don’t buy a piece that is specifically for the apartment in which you currently live. Simply, enjoy the pursuit of finding what you like. It can be fun for young couples to explore and discover their unique tastes together. Don’t be afraid to buy what you like and do your own thing. Try not to care so much about what your friends or other people like. In this era of design anything goes. Right now the rules are not very important for decorating a home. Fred doesn’t mind when a home uses styles from different eras. In fact, he enjoys when the interior of a home looks like it evolved over a period of time.
