The 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show took place on Saturday, June 12th and this year’s winner, a Pekingese named Wasabi,  stole America’s hearts with his elegant fur and confident pep in every step. Westminster is second only to the Kentucky Derby for sporting events continuously held in the United States, and if you’re a dog lover, an annual favorite.  All of this got us wondering - what are America’s favorite dogs?

The American Kennel Club releases an annual list of the Most Popular Dog Breeds in the United States, and this year’s list includes a roundup of long-time favorites. These pups are not only beautiful but also wonderful companions for the whole family.

#1 - Labrador Retriever

It’s no surprise these dogs are at the top of the list. Not only are they intelligent and eager to please but are loyal, loving, and work as amazing therapy dogs.

#2 - German Shepherd

German Shepherds come in at a close second. These talented dogs are known for their herding abilities as well as guarding and protecting their human companions.

#3 - Golden Retriever

If the name of this breed doesn’t give it away, we don’t know what does. Their golden personality truly lights up the room. From their intelligence to their affectionate personality, Goldens are amazing dogs that can bring the whole family together.

#4 - French Bulldogs

If you want a pup by your side at all times, you’ve come to the right place. Frenchies are loving and great for the whole family. When left alone for too long they will miss you terribly because they want to be around at all times! These adorable pups make a loyal companion for life.

#5 - Bulldogs

Rounding out the Top 5 are Bulldogs. Described as “kind but courageous, friendly but dignified” by the AKC  - their pouty faces and slobbery kisses make them irresistible.
