More than one in three women is living with some form of cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular diseases, which includes stroke, are the number 1 killer of women and claim a woman's life about every 80 seconds. But nearly 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented. The American Heart Association (AHA) aims to change these realities because losing one woman is too many.
AHA’s signature women’s initiative, Go Red for Women, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. Go Red For Women inspires women to make lifestyle changes, mobilize communities and shape policies to save lives with the goal of improving the health of all women.
In 2004, the Go Red for Women campaign was launched to solve a problem – too few women knew about their number one killer: cardiovascular disease. Nearly 17 years later, Go Red for Women has evolved into a global movement and is a driving force behind accelerating science, advancing public health policy, addressing the multitude of gender and racial gaps for women in research, healthcare and more, as well as ensuring all women are aware of their greatest health threat, their risks and what they can do to reduce them.
The Go Red for Women experience continues to be the cornerstone of the Go Red for Women movement in local communities. This empowering gathering focuses on preventing heart disease and stroke, shares stories of people impacted by this issue and raises critically-needed funds to support research and education initiatives. It’s no longer just about wearing red; it’s no longer just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about all women making a commitment to stand together and taking charge of their own heart health as well as the health of those they can’t bear to live without.
The more a woman knows about heart disease, the better chance she has of beating it. The first facts you need to know are very serious: Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action.
