I’m confused. I feel like there’s multiple Miss Alabama titles that we hear about. What is the official Miss Alabama?
There is only one Miss Alabama. The name “Miss Alabama” was trademarked in 1921 by the Birmingham News. I realize there may be confusion because of the creation of other pageant systems; however, only one official Miss Alabama exists.

In Miss Alabama you competed as Miss Hoover, but you’re from Vestavia. How does that work?
You can compete for the title of Miss Alabama no matter what area you are from. As long as you are a resident of Alabama or attend college in Alabama, you are eligible to compete in a local preliminary competition. For example, my first year I was Miss Cahaba Valley, then Miss Trussville, and then Miss Hoover.

I always get nervous watching the contestants answering the ‘current events’ question. Is that the most nerve-racking part of the competition?
Personally, the on-stage question makes me the most nervous, because I know everyone is watching me and I get scared that maybe I don’t know enough about the specific topic. However, over the years I have had to change my mindset. Each time I had to do an on-stage question, I would spend the whole day repeating to myself, “I love on-stage question!” This was a way for me to get excited and remind myself that it is just another opportunity to show who I am!

Now that you’re Miss Alabama, what will be on your publicity calendar leading up to Miss America? Will you still have time to be on the Auburn dance team?
I will be taking a year off of school, so I will not be a Tiger Paw this year. I will have a lot on the publicity calendar leading up to Miss America! The local preliminary competitions for the next year have already begun, so I am traveling across the state to emcee those events! I also get booked for appearances each week throughout the year! Whether that be work events, holiday events, or fundraising opportunities for Cystic Fibrosis, I will be very busy this year! In addition, I will be preparing for Miss America both physically and mentally to make sure I am best prepared to represent Alabama. Is dancing at football games more fun than basketball, or do basketball performances offer a more confined spotlight on the dance team?
I would say football is where we showcase a lot of our pom skills since we do a lot of spiriting, and basketball games allows us to get creative with our performances. Our numbers can vary and may either be pom, jazz, or hip hop.

Any predictions on the upcoming basketball season?
I feel like I do not know enough to make an accurate prediction; however, to me, the best thing about Auburn is that win or lose, Auburn people will continue supporting Auburn no matter what. We are a school built on spirit!

You’ve been on the dance team for several seasons. Is each season a fresh start, or are you almost guaranteed a spot if you want to return?
Each season is a fresh start! Everyone has to tryout for the team again, even if you are a returner. This means that there is no guarantee and 19 spots available, not including our captain. Our tryout process is two days long.

You’re a competitive collegiate athlete. How has that intense training prepped you for your next steps after college?
One of the most important things I learned is how to successfully manage my time. Each day, I had to stick to a strict schedule in order to accomplish what I needed to do each day. Not only did I have to hold myself accountable to prepare for nursing exams, but I also had a team that was counting on me to show up each day and be my best. I also learned that through hard work and determination, you can accomplish your goals and doors will open along the way. My involvement has also taught me the value in communication and outreach.
My plan is to receive my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Auburn University. From there, I will get critical care experience before applying to Nurse Anesthesia School. I hope to acquire my Doctorate in Nurse Anesthesia Practice and become a Pediatric Nurse Anesthetist.
