The Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema team has been bringing innovative film experiences to the Magic City for more than 20 years, and they have no plans of slowing down as we head into 2021.
Sidewalk Cinema, the festival’s beautiful independent theater which is very cooly located inside The Pizitz Food Hall, returns with reduced capacity to ensure safety while providing the comforting movie theater experience Birminghamians deserve. The theater will screen Wonder Woman 1984 beginning Christmas Day into the New Year!
Rachel Morgan, Sidewalk’s Creative Director, mentioned that although the movie will be available on streaming platforms, the creative minds behind the movie have all expressed that it was made to be viewed in theaters--and Sidewalk is ready to provide that experience for Birmingham moviegoers.
“It’s a real experience to come to the cinema," Morgan said. "You’re going to enjoy the entire thing. Down to the bathrooms, where we have curated music playing. It’s a good place to get a drink and watch a film." Playing alongside Wonder Woman during this holiday season is Promising Young Woman, which features an incredible cast including Laverne Cox, Alison Brie, Bo Burnham and Carey Mulligan. Sidewalk is also renting digital copies of The Library That Dolly Built through New Year’s Eve, with a percentage of proceeds benefiting Sidewalk.
Want to plan a watch party of your favorite movie with your closest friends? Sidewalk is also offering private cinema rentals for you and your friends to have a safe viewing experience for up to 20 people for just $150, with bar, concessions and catering options available. Perhaps the most exciting news on the horizon for the Sidewalk team is the opportunity to be one of only 28 venues across the country to be a part of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The iconic festival will take place January 28th through February 3rd in an online platform with premieres, events, artist talks, and cutting-edge XR exhibitions plus in-person events at independent theatre such as Sidewalk. Birmingham actually has twice the spotlight as one of only a handful of locations that will include both drive-in theater and cinema viewing experiences.
It’s safe to say, no matter how you like to watch your movies--Sidewalk has you covered!
