The weather is just now starting to warm up in Birmingham, but the concerts have been red hot all year long. Fan favorites in every genre have been journeying to the Magic City to play their biggest songs, and June looks to be more of the same. Some of our favorite Birmingham-based acts are taking the stage again this month as well - which means we have a busy calendar ahead. Here are some of the shows that we are looking forward to the most.
Terry Ohms “Rock Songs” Album Release Show at Saturn (Thursday, June 1)
Terry Ohms is releasing a brand new album called “Rock Songs” and wants to celebrate with the city of Birmingham. This music-filled party will feature a performance from Ohms along with sets from Magic City favorites Will Stewart and The Prescriptions. This June 1st show at Saturn is a great way to ensure you start the month off right.
Devin the Dude w/ Q Dot Davis & CovRaw at Zydeco (Saturday, June 3)
Devin the Dude is weed rap royalty. The writer behind “Doobie Ashtray” and other such classics is known for his smooth flow, storytelling, and way with words. All of this will be displayed when Devin the Dude takes the stage at Zydeco on Saturday, June 3rd. Joining him is one of Birmingham’s hardest working musicians, Q Dot Davis, and CovRaw.
Steel Pulse at Iron City (Friday, June 9)
One of reggae’s biggest musical ambassadors will be in Birmingham on Friday, June 9th. Steel Pulse is returning to Iron City, and as someone who was lucky enough to witness their last performance at our city’s most famously air conditioned venue I can confidently say that you want to be in the building for this show.
Parachute Show: Witch’s Wall, Wax Fur, Beersippers at Saturn (Sunday, June 11)
It is pretty much a guarantee at this point that Saturn’s free Parachute Show series is going to end up on our must-see concert list each month. The run of shows put together for people of the city to enjoy has been incredible. The Sunday, June 11th, edition is bound to be another great experience as Witch’s Wall, Wax Fur, and Beersippers all grace the stage.
Tink & Friends: Thanks 4 Everything Tour Pt. 2 at The BJCC (Thursday, June 15)
Tink has been making national waves for over a decade now, and continues to bring the very best to every show she plays. Birmingham gets the full Tink experience when the musician comes to the BJCC on Thursday, June 15, along with Jacquees and Sonta for a can’t-miss concert.
Buffalo Lemonpepper Project with Free Candy at The Nick (Friday, June 16)
If you’re looking to get groovy in the Magic City this month, you quite simply need to be at The Nick on Friday, June 16th. Two of Alabama’s most entertaining bands in the Buffalo Lemonpepper Project and Free Candy will be jamming all night to start off a fun summer weekend. You won’t want to miss this show.
Foo Fighters at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre (Friday, June 16)
A lot of things in life aren’t very cut and dry. Most things are debatable and the answer lies somewhere in between a bunch of different truths. One thing that is clear to all though is that the Foo Fighters have been the biggest name in rock and roll for nearly a decade. The band will be playing in Pelham at the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre on Friday, June 16th. This is a show that will be talked about for years to come.
James Taylor at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre (Sunday, June 18)
The Oak Mountain Amphitheatre came out swinging this June. Two days after brining the biggest rock and roll band of our era, the Pelham venue hosts one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time in James Taylor. This Sunday, June 18th show is going to be one you’ll want to witness.
Tori Amos: Oceans to Oceans Tour at the Alabama Theatre (Thursday, June 22)
Speaking of world-famous singer-songwriters coming to town, the legendary Tori Amos will be at the historic Alabama Theatre on Thursday, June 22nd. There is hardly a better artist-venue pairing to be found, meaning Birmingham residents are in for a once in a lifetime experience. This event is presented by Birmingham Mountain Radio.
Sunday Funday with Taylor Hollingsworth at The Nick (Sunday, June 25)
One of the most fun moments of each month is Sunday Funday with Taylor Hollingsworth at The Nick. A beautiful thing about Birmingham is that we are constantly able to casually interact with great musicians who also happen to be wonderful people. Taylor at The Nick on Sunday, June 25th, is an embodiment of that.
An Evening with Yo La Tengo at Saturn (Tuesday, June 27)
This just feels like a big show. Yo La Tengo at Saturn on Tuesday, June 27th, is going to be an intimate experience with an awe-striking band. We couldn’t think of a better way to close out the month with this show that we would imagine will sell out relatively quickly.
Whatever your favorite genre is, there’s a show for you this month. Get out and enjoy the fun that’s happening all about town!
