Faith Skate and Birmingham skaters have been celebrating “Go Skateboarding Day” for many years now, but this is the first time they will get to do so at an official city skatepark. The CityWalk skate park, which was designed by New Line Skateparks with the input from Magic City skateboarders, has paired its soft opening with the annual skate-based holiday. The park will open at noon on Tuesday, June 21st, with contests beginning at 6pm.
There will be Pumptrack Races, Trick Contests, Stair & Rail Competitions, and other fun festive adventures to bring in a new era of recreational sports and community spaces in Birmingham. It is free to participate in contests and to come to the park, with those skating needing to sign a waiver beforehand (online or in-person day of). The park’s weekly schedule will soon be noon to 10pm Monday through Friday, and 9am to 10pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
The skate park represents years of hard work and dedicated skating in the Magic City, and resulted in a bigger success than many could have ever imagined. The impressive design joins the CityWalk bridge-following park that includes water fountains, a food truck park, and a wonderful entrance to Legacy Arena. Summer in Uptown is sure to be bustling, with the World Games coming into town to bring even more excitement as the Stallions leave the city with a 9-1 record to represent Birmingham in the USFL playoffs.
Tomorrow is a significant day in Magic City history. We’re thankful for businesses like Faith Skate that invested in their communities for years and continue to do so, and glad that Go Skateboarding Day now coincides with the day many skateboarders rode the CityWalk park for the first time. A monumental moment.
