“Back to school, back to school to prove to dad that I’m not a fool.” When Billy Madison sang those words while waiting on the bus it struck a chord with students all over the world. There are so many things to consider before the first day back that it can start to feel overwhelming. Nervousness transforms into a barrage of thoughts like what to wear, what classes will be the most difficult, and perhaps most importantly - when will the cafeteria serve crispitos? Today’s youth have something that the generations before them weren’t as lucky to access though - the internet and all its wisdom. For example, this About Town writer is about to calm the nerves of any anxious student or parent preparing their kid for their first day of school with a simple list available to all who have the internet. Talk about modern wonders.

Outfit

Yes, the first section should probably be about education. It is however the very first day of school aka a premiere fashion moment. Everyone wants to come in feeling their best and showing people their lovely personality from the get-go. Your outfit is an easy way to make a statement about who you are before you ever say a word. Have fun with it, don’t take it too seriously, and don’t wear pants that are too short or you may get asked “Where’s the flood?” like I did in 9th grade.

Courses

The Boy Scouts are known for many things. Snazzy green shorts, knot-tying expertise, and merit badges to name a few. But one of the things that should be most known from the group is the Scout Motto: “Be Prepared.” It never hurts to plan ahead, and this applies to your upcoming courses. If certain subjects already seem like they will be a stress early on, plan to start studying early and don’t be afraid to look up tutoring services.

First Morning

Being prepared can be applied on multiple levels, with the first morning being one of the most important. You want to give yourself enough time to eat breakfast, get ready for the day, and get to school on time - without stress. Take the time to know where your classes are beforehand so you aren’t sprinting in confusion to find them. Start your first day off on the right foot to set yourself up for a more relaxing semester. Parents, are you trying to get the first day of school photo? Make sure to give yourself the time necessary to do so.

Support Teachers!

As we all know by now, our heroic teachers often have to buy their own school supplies. Throw in the fact that teachers spend everyday educating the children of our communities about the world around them, and it’s easy to see that teachers play a very important but often underappreciated role in society. Fortunately for Magic City residents - we have multiple to choose from. Help those that are benefitting us all.

Replace those first day nerves with first day knowledge that you’re exactly where you are meant to be - and enjoy it.
