One of the most beautiful events in the Magic CIty is returning to Railroad Park this weekend, as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra brings back their free weekend concert series. The 2022 edition is even more impactful as it is the 100th year of our city’s musical masters performing classic compositions for joyful audiences. The Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 8pm, while the Sunday show starts at 6pm.
The Friday show starts the weekend off on a fantastic note. Titled “Symphonic Spectacular”, the evening’s playlist is sure to remind all Birminghamians why we love the ASO so much. Featured selections include Brian Raphael Nabors’ “Jubilo”, Morton Gould’s “Symphonette No. 2”, and Aaron Copland’s “An Outdoor Overture”. Saturday is no slouch either, with “A Midsummer Night's Dream & More” highlighting classics by Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Sibelius. Sunday is the earliest event, making it the perfect “Family Fun Day”. Selections include polkas, a tribute to the famed composer John Williams, “Stars Fell On Alabama”, and a Disney tribute section. As you can see each evening brings its own musical memories to be made, so grab a blanket and pick the show (or two, or three. Heck why not?) that works best for you to enjoy a special moment in time.
If seeing one of the nation’s finest orchestras perform at the beautiful Railroad Park with a scenic Birmingham skyline as a backdrop wasn’t enough, there are a lot of incredible food truck options each day as well. City favorites like A-Train, Smoke on Wheels, Steel City Pops, Chinito’s, Hollywood Grill, and more will be served alongside cotton candy, lemonade, and more.
100 years of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra is a great reason to get out and enjoy a wonderful Magic City evening with some great tunes and fresh air. Birmingham has changed so much in that century, and the sea of happy humans from all walks of life coming together in celebration is a clear sign that we are moving towards a brighter, better, beautiful city.
