The summer months are here, and the amount of things to do in the Magic City is only growing. Longer daylight hours, more free days for the family, and warmer weather has brought out all sorts of fun happenings throughout town. This includes concerts, fishing festivals, and plenty of fun festivities all around town. Here are a few of our favorites.
AEIVA Summer Exhibitions Opening Reception (Friday)
UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, or AEIVA, has long been setting up world-class art galleries that otherwise never would have come to Birmingham. There will be three great exhibits on display at the gallery this summer: Strings of Gratitude by Delrico Gibson, The Watcher and The Watchman by Lauvaghan Jenkins, and She Drank Gold by Vadis Turner. This opening night for all of these exhibitions is this Friday, June 9th, at the gallery. There will be music by Eric Essix to add to the atmosphere.
Steel Pulse at Iron City (Friday)
Steel Pulse is one of our must-see concerts for June, and provides one of the most fun ways to start off your weekend. The reggae band impressed last time they came to Iron City and returns to the venue this Friday night for another round of high-quality fun.
Birmingham Catfish Rodeo at East Lake Park (Saturday)
This is one of my personal favorite events of the year! Birminghamians from all over gather at East Lake Park to enjoy a day of fishing for the newly released catfish that came the night before. It’s a day of great fishing, food trucks, and memory making. Festivities begin early so make sure to get your rod ready the night before to claim a good spot!
Caribbean Food and Music Festival at Debardeleben Park (Saturday)
Another one of the most fun annual events in the Greater Birmingham Metro takes place this Saturday as the Central Alabama Caribbean Food & Music Festival comes into town. You won’t find a part of town with better food trucks, dance music, and positive vibes than Debardeleben Park in Bessemer this weekend! We would highly recommend making plans to at least stop by.
Chris Staples w/ Tamara Harper at Seasick Records (Saturday)
Seasick Records has done countless things to bring fantastic experiences to the Magic City. One of the main areas the store does so is through their intimate concert series. Seasick is doing so again this Saturday as they bring back Chris Staples with Tamara Harper - who’s fashion work with Small Woods we’ve covered in the past - as the opening act. This will be a wonderful afternoon event.
Jack Brown’s 60’s Themed 9th Birthday Party (Saturday)
It seems like Jack Brown’s has been a part of the Birmingham DNA as far back as the days when the heaviest corner on Earth was found in the city, but the restaurant is under a decade in age! The fun crew at the Magic City’s most famous beer and burger joint are celebrating with a 60’s themed event this Saturday! You’re going to want to be there.
