The weather in Birmingham over the last few days has been an absolute dream. Although we’re entering the final moments of May, the air has stayed relatively cool and without an overwhelming amount of humidity. Throw in a stretch of sunny days and we are at perfect Alabama weather for socializing. Birmingham has heard the message loud and clear, and has responded by giving us endless fun events to choose from. Here are a few of our favorite things to check out this week.
Star Party featuring Funnymaine, Shaunak Godkhindi, & Mandal at Saturn (Wednesday)
Chris Ivey, Wes Van Horn, and Darrell Nance have been upping the ante when it comes to the quality of comedians coming through Birmingham. Star Party has brought out some of the fastest rising national acts alongside Magic City favorites, and is guaranteed to bring the laughs on a Wednesday at Saturn. The streak is bound to continue with this week’s edition that features Ivey’s longtime friend and Bham comedy legend Funnymaine, Shaunak Godkhindi (Atlanta), and Mandal (Atlanta) taking the stage.
Sheila E. at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center (Thursday)
One of the most talented and famous drummers on the planet will be at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center on Thursday. Shelia E. is coming to impress, and is bringing people from the city to ensure it’s a good time. The Parker High School band drum line will be opening the show, with DJ Bad Boy Butch and 98.7 KISS FM providing tunes in the lobby. Aww Shucks and Fat Charles will also be on site serving their famous foods. Talk about a good time!
Alabaster CityFest 2023 at Thompson High School (Saturday)
Alabaster is bringing in the summer weather with a celebration of all things local. The all-Alabaster extravaganza takes place this Saturday from 9am to 11pm at Thompson High School. Food trucks, artists, local businesses, and musicians will all be coming together to make for a guaranteed great day. The day’s headlining acts Michael Warren, Chris Lane, and Sister Hazel are big acts for this free and fun event.
Funky Food Truck Festival at Cahaba Brewing (Saturday)
If I had to name two things every Birminghamian is bound to love it would be getting funky and a good food truck. Cahaba Brewing is bringing the delightful pairing together - along with other vendors and of course beer and other beverages - this Saturday from 1 to 5pm. This free event is hosted by AIDS Alabama and features many of the best food trucks in the city including A-Train, Pasteles La MoreliAna, and the brewery’s anchor truck - The Current. The full list of vendors and food trucks can be found here.
