It’s another fantastic week for live events in the Magic City. There is an ample supply of concerts, dance parties, open mics, and movie spectaculars. A casual walk into a new establishment could be the first night at your new favorite hangout spot, and About Town is here to help you find some of the best places to go. Here are a few of our favorite things happening this week.
Hanson at Alabama Theatre (Tuesday)
The brothers behind Hanson have been a worldwide sensation ever since they first blessed our radio waves in the 90s. The pop wonders will be playing with their full live band at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham on Tuesday night, and it’s going to be a wonderful evening for live music and singing “MMMBop” at the top of our lungs.
Open Mic Poetry at Little London (Wednesday)
While you wonderful readers may have gotten to know me for my written words, this author also happens to host monthly events at Little London! They occur on every other Wednesday, and alternate between an Open Mic Night and a Music Producer Showcase. The producer event is co-hosted with Grammy Award-winning producer Luke Crowder, and the Open Mic (which is this Wednesday) is hosted by David The-Gr8. It’s free to attend, anyone can sign up, and we usually have Birmingham art and fashion on display.
Boss Rush/Carpool Kids/Day Job at Saturn (Thursday)
Three of the Magic City’s best bands are playing a free show at Saturn this Thursday night. Boss Rush is going on tour, and is playing a show in their hometown to celebrate. They will be joined by Indie Rock darlings Carpool Kids and the great guys behind Day Job. Saturn has been putting on some great local shows (which are often free), and we’d highly encourage everyone to support.
The Midnight Effect Gothic Summer Dance Party (Saturday)
2022 is becoming the year of the goth in Birmingham, and the scene is a fun one to be a part of. The Midnight Effect’s dance parties have been a big part of this good time, and the group will be returning to Electra with the perfect Gothic hits for a Saturday night in Birmingham. Geisha, Memorexx, and PanzerSoldat will be playing Industrial, Post-Punk, Synthwave, Synthpop, EBM, New Wave, and 80s music all night long.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at Alabama Theatre (Sunday)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a movie that places the viewer in an entirely different universe - one full of candy and all sorts of body-altering obstacles. Gene Wilder and surrounding cast all shine in the exceptional tale, which will be shown at the Alabama Theatre this Sunday at 2pm. It’s sure to be a fun experience for the whole family.
As you can see, there is plenty to take in over the next few days. Stay cool, have fun, and support all the things that make our city wonderfully unique!
