It’s another new week in Birmingham, which means dozens of new concerts, dance productions, and markets for the good people of our city to enjoy. The next streak of days features celebrations and musical goodbyes, to guarantee Birminghamians can feel every emotion on the spectrum this week if they choose to do so. Whichever events you choose to attend will be the correct choice, but here are a few of our favorites.
The Goodbye Show: Black Plastique, Mel. Crozby, Linnil, Erthling. (Thursday)
If there are any typos in the next few sentences, it’s because of the teardrops falling on my keyboard. Black Plastique and Erthling. exemplify everything I and so many others love about the Birmingham music scene: they are damn good musicians with original ideas that choose to spend their energy uplifting the creative community around them. Both selfless wordsmiths are leaving the Magic City for new pastures. Black Plastique to Chicago and Erthling. to North Carolina. It’s sure to be a hip-hop love affair at The Upstairs at Avondale Thursday evening as the pair are joined by two other city favorites in Mel. Crozby and Linnil for an amazing night of live music and celebrating the beautiful moments and sounds we enjoyed together over the years. Dsalf;j;lakfj;af. Dang you tears!
The Drag (Thursday)
What would you say the three best things in life are? Many of us would answer lofi beats, vintage video games, and anime. This trifecta of goodness will be blended together (along with a vintage clothing pop-up from Magic City Mercantile!) at Monday Night Brewing this Thursday night at “The Drag”. Rumin8, Nekaybaaw, BAKE$, and SAYGO! are all bringing fantastic beats that will go great with the N64 tournament and other fun activities planned for the evening.
Black Market 10th Anniversary Party (Friday)
Black Market Bar & Grill 5 Points has been bringing great food, beverage, and weekly events to the people of Birmingham for a decade now, and want to celebrate with the city all week long and especially on Friday. The watering hole is bringing some good tunes from Margeaux & The Cat’s Meow to go great with their unique menu items and colorful décor.
Firehouse Scholarship Fundraiser (Friday)
The Firehouse did one of the most impressive evolutions seen in the Magic City when the DIY space became a music education nonprofit that helps Birmingham youth learn new instruments. A big part of this experience is in musical scholarships to help families send their kids to these extracurricular classes, and there’s a great benefit show this Friday night at Ferus On 41st to keep funds up! The wonderful Janet Simpson, Terry Ohms, and Ruffino will be bringing their fantastic music to Ferus to benefit the venue’s neighbor on 41st Street.
Journey To Africa Live Dance Production (Saturday)
The DJD Theatre at Alabama School of Fine Arts has been bringing powerful performances to the Magic City in addition to supporting our own resident’s creative pursuits. The supportive streak continues as Dance Levels brings Journey To Africa Dance Production this Saturday night. The visual experience shows the African influence on African American Culture, and is sure to be a toe-tapping experience.
Woodlawn Street Market (Saturday)
The Woodlawn Street Market is one of the most fun recurring events in Birmingham, and gives us plenty of local business owners and artists to support. The summer night editions are always a good time with dancing, music, and great food all playing a role. We’d highly recommend checking out the August market this Saturday.
The Room Midnight Madness (Saturday - Sunday)
The Room is one of the most cherished creations ever made for cinema, and Sidewalk is bringing Mark himself to Birmingham to watch the movie in a midnight screening this weekend! Greg Sestero not only played Mark but wrote “The Disaster Artist”, which would later be turned into its own successful movie. It should be a uniquely fun night at the theater under The Pizitz.
