August is winding down in the Magic City. While the weather may be getting ready to cool off, events are heating up all around town. World-renowned film festivals are combining with the return of some of Birmingham’s finest hometown heroes and multiple music festivals to create the perfect week out on the town. It’s a good week to explore, and here are a few of the finest options.
Sidewalk Film Festival (All week)
It’s here, it’s here! Sidewalk Film Festival has become one of the most talked about film festivals in the country and this year’s event is going to be a good one. The Black Lens, SHOUT, Alabama Narrative, and other selection categories ensure that we hear important stories. Duquette Johnson, Ashley Causey, Angela Williams, T. Marie King, and many more all make Alabama voices and history a focal point this weekend. The opening night parties, film panels, and jam-packed screening schedule will keep you busy the entire weekend.
Phantom Limb Tour Kickoff with Jahnah Camille & Ranger (Thursday)
Phantom Limb is going on tour, and they want to kick things off with a stellar Birmingham lineup with themselves, Jahnah Camille, and Ranger all taking the stage at Firehouse this Thursday night. The band is touring to celebrate the release of their second album, “Pastoral”. These are three acts on the rise and it’s sure to be a great show.
Land Aid at Avondale Brewing (Friday)
What’s better than great tunes from favorites like Greensky Bluegrass and The Sam Bush Band? Listening to them at Avondale Brewery to benefit the important cause at Freshwater Land Trust. The 13th annual Land Aid event on Friday evening provides this fun-filled opportunity for Birmingham residents, and we’d recommend checking it out.
Lee Baines at The Nick (Friday)
Lee Baines at The Nick is stuff of Southern rock lore, but it will be witnessed first-hand this Friday. The big-hearted musician is returning to his town with Loamlands fresh off the release of his critically praised and truly important album “Old-Time Folks”. You will be missing out if you don’t catch this show!
Birmingham Folk Festival (Saturday)
It seems like it’s always crazy times in the world nowadays, but a little free folk music and community togetherness could go a long way in making things a bit better. Fortunately for the Magic City, we are doing exactly that this Saturday at the Avondale Amphitheater located in Avondale Park for the Birmingham Folk Festival. The 2022 lineup features some of Alabama’s finest pickers and players, and there are plenty of other fun things to check out while enjoying the music.
As you can see there are endless options for every entertainment flavor found in the Magic City this weekend. Your toughest choice is deciding which ones to attend!
