The Birmingham music scene is truly something beautiful. Those who’ve given it a chance understand it’s not local bias - we have an incredibly talented music scene. Throw in the national artists coming through town each week and every night brings a good show to the Magic City. That statement is doubly true this week with a medley of concerts that appeal to fans of all genres. Here are a few events we’d recommend checking out.
Jerrod Atkins, Danny Hammons, Ricky Tate & Greg Lee at The Nick (Thursday)
The Nick is known for hosting some of the best rising bands along with the Magic City’s top musicians on a nightly basis, and this statement holds very true on the local level Thursday evening. Four of the city’s finest songwriters, folk musicians, and country-blues artists will be taking the stage as Jerrod Atkins, Danny Hammons, Ricky Tate, and Greg Lee are all signed on to perform. It’s going to be a wonderful night full of fantastic tunes.
Sylvia Rose Novak w/ Brotha Josh + Grand Champ at The Upstairs at Avondale (Thursday)
“The South has something to say.” That line was true when Andre 3000 spoke it in 1995 and it is certainly true today. If you want to hear some of the most genuine, talented tunes you’ll ever hear - listen to rising Southern artists. The Upstairs at Avondale is bringing three of the best to the city on Thursday as Sylvia Rose Novak (Athens) is joined by Birmingham favorites Brotha Josh and Grand Champ.
Gavin DeGraw at Iron City (Saturday)
Gavin DeGraw provided the soundtrack to many an Alabamian’s growing up experience. “I Don’t Want To Be” and “Chariot” are just a few that we all belted out and related to back in the day. There is a reason the musician’s show at Iron City on Saturday night is sold out and in About Town’s most anticipated Magic City shows in the month of August - it’s going to be a night full of beautiful moments. Resell tickets can still be purchased through the venue’s official platform!
DJ Paul w/ Kidd Kidd, Q Dot Davis, and CovRaw (Sunday)
It would be harder to name a group that shaped modern day hip-hop (and music in general) than Three 6 Mafia. From winning an Academy Award to shaping the sound of Atlanta rap with their unique style, the uniquely and unashamedly themselves tunes created by Three 6 still carry a huge legacy today. DJ Paul is the mastermind behind much of this success, and will be at Zydeco on Sunday night to celebrate all the hits. He will be joined by Kidd Kidd, Q Dot Davis, and CovRaw for what is a can’t-miss show.
Sunday Funday with Rebecca Egeland at The Nick (Sunday)
One of the most beautiful and powerful voices in the Magic City is jumping in on The Nick’s fun (and free!) Sunday Funday series this week. If you haven’t seen Rebecca Egeland perform live you need to, and if you have you know why you need to be there! This is a great way to close out an eventful weekend in Birmingham.
