Although the weather might be unpredictable lately, these hidden cafés and bars are here to stay. Tucked away on Morris Avenue, there’s something for everyone, and whether that’s a passing snack or an afternoon brunch, these five spots have got you covered.
The Essential
With such friendly and knowledgeable staff who are waiting to greet you from the moment you arrive, there’s no doubt you won’t enjoy what The Essential has to offer. Their lunch, brunch, and dinner menus are certainly unique, and the devilled crab toast was a personal highlight. At night, after the brunch chatter is over, the cocktail menus come out and The Essential turns into a popular dinner with drinks spot. However, this place fills up quick, so be sure to make a reservation!
The Alabama Peanut Company
If you’re looking for a special treat to eat as a passing snack, The Alabama Peanut Company is just the place for you. It seems only fitting that the company is based in Birmingham’s historic district as the owners pride themselves on using traditional southern techniques to create flavors such as Alabama Cajun, Buffalo Ranch, and Jalapeño. They also offer some of the best Peanut Brittle and being able to watch the process of how their peanuts are flavored makes for a truly unique experience.
Pizza Grace
With their grand opening only happening last month, Pizza Grace has already begun to make a name for itself in downtown Birmingham. Located in the newly refurbished Mercantile on Morris, eager customers have the choice to either dine in or take out these naturally leavened pizzas. With lots of delicious vegetarian options too, it’s hard to say no to this accessible yet upscale pizza option.
Carrigan’s Public House
Located further along Morris Avenue stands Carrigan’s Public House. Offering both indoor and outdoor dining, this 21+ establishment is a great place to come for drinks and dinner with friends, in both the winter and summer months. Their daily specials and house cocktails also mean there’s always something different and for great prices too.
Pilcrow Cocktail Cellar
This bar is by far the hardest find --but most definitely worth it. Hidden beneath Founders Station and accessible through a small alley next to The Essential, Pilcrow’s Cocktail Cellar makes for an exciting yet sophisticated night of fun. Their full craft cocktail menu specializes in Agave spirits and as well as cocktails, they also offer a range of different wines and beers.
