With azaleas in bloom, sunny skies, and warmer weather, it's the perfect time to grab a blanket, pack a cooler, and head out for a picnic. Here are three of the best picnic spots around the Magic City to enjoy the spring weather.
1. Railroad Park
Railroad Park in downtown Birmingham offers the ideal mix of green space and city scenery. It has large open lawns, paved walking trails, and a small lake with fountains. The train tracks running along the edge of the park add a unique backdrop. There are plenty of spots to set up a picnic, plus occasional food trucks and nearby takeout options. It’s a good spot for a quick lunch, people-watching, or just relaxing in the middle of the city.
2. Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Located in Mountain Brook, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens are free to enter and open daily. The grounds include several themed gardens like the Japanese garden, rose garden, and native plant collections. There are benches, shaded lawns, and quiet areas perfect for a picnic. It’s calm, well-maintained, and great for walking around before or after you eat. No food vendors on-site, so you’ll need to bring your own.
3. Red Mountain Park
Red Mountain Park is a large, wooded area with several miles of trails, scenic overlooks, and historical sites from its iron mining past. It’s best for those who want to pair their picnic with a hike or some light outdoor activity. There are designated picnic areas and a few treehouse-style platforms with views. It’s also dog-friendly with a fenced-in dog park. No food services on-site, so pack everything in and out.
