Birmingham’s reputation as a foodie city is becoming much more known to food enthusiasts around the nation. Fine dining award winners are located down the road from hole-in-the-wall favorites - and all of the experiences blend together for a flavorful adventure that is hard to best. This holds true when it comes to the city’s seafood selections. Those visiting Central Alabama may be shocked to see how vast and delectable our oceanic offerings are - but Magic City residents have appreciated these staples for years. Here are a few of the most fun seafood restaurants in Birmingham.
Automatic Seafood and Oysters
Automatic was launched into the national spotlight when Chef Adam Evans won the 2022 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the South. Birmingham has been in love with this fine establishment since they first opened their doors in 2019. Automatic’s inspired dishes are primarily sourced from the Gulf of Mexico with oysters coming from the Southern and Eastern coasts. Great drinks, surrounding decor, and a lively setting highlight the experience even more. If you haven’t jumped in on this Magic City favorite, make reservations soon and see what all the craze is about!
La Perla Nayarita
La Perla was in About Town’s article discussing the dining magnificence found on Green Springs Highway, and with great reason. The restaurant is primarily dedicated to Mexican seafood dishes, and they make sure to save these tasty dishes in very large portions. Giant margaritas go great alongside the flavorful feasts found before you, and karaoke or fans cheering on sports teams is often happening all around you which makes for an eventful meal.
Ocean
Many in the city were understandably heart-broken at the recent news of 5 Point Public House Oyster Bar’s closing, but we were relieved to hear that its beloved sister restaurant next door, Ocean, would be remaining open. Not only that, many of the staff at 5 Point were joining the team! This 5 Points South fixture has won many awards with their menu that changes nightly while highlighting seafood favorites. Lobster, oysters, sushi, snapper, and a tantalizing dessert menu are just a few of the highlights to be found.
Yo Chef Surf and Turf SmokeHouse
Yo Chef has quickly become one of the most popular dining destinations - seafood or otherwise - in Birmingham. The Finley Avenue establishment serves delicious meals late into the night to ensure that Magic City residents are able to get the seafood fix at all hours. Lobster tail, shrimp, grouper, fish and grits, and seafood pasta bowls are just a few of the great options to be found alongside great drinks and even the option to enjoy a little hookah. Yo Chef’s weekend brunches are another experience to make sure you check out soon.
