A bucket list is a reminder to live life grandly and experience the things you want to on this earth before it is too late. The idea to cross off significant life moments before you “kick the bucket” was further popularized by a namesake movie featuring the dynamic duo of Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, but has always been a fun task for interested parties to partake in. It doesn’t have to be serious, but then again it can be if you want it to. Birmingham has plenty of lifetime moments that are unique to our Magic City. Here are 5 that are on our list.
Attend a Concert at a Historic Theater
Live music has been and always will be something that people turn to when they want to partake in memorable moments. Whether it’s our favorite band or a first-time listen, it’s easy to walk away with a smile and a tune in your head. This experience is further lifted if you catch a concert in the visual beauty of one of Alabama’s historic venues. The Alabama Theatre, Lyric Theatre, the recently renovated Carver Theatre, and the soon-to-return Masonic Temple have shown some of history’s most famous acts and are still great locations to take in a show today.
Enjoy a James Beard Award Winning Restaurant
Birmingham has become one of the premiere cities for a great food experience, and there are many fantastic options to choose from. For the bucket list, you’ve got to put down a James Beard Award winning restaurant. Fortunately, we have many options to choose from in Birmingham with chefs like Frank Stitt, Chris Hastings, and Adam Evans leading the charge.
Rocky Horror Picture Show Screening
October is one of the most fun months on the calendar. This is largely thanks to the costumes and customs of Halloween, but many thanks must be given to other factors like the weather cooling down and college football being in full swing. Rocky Horror Picture Show is a magnificently unique film that leans fully into the idea of dressed-up madness, making it the perfect October experience. The live screening comes with rolls of toilet paper, water guns, and other random trinkets for watchers to use during specific scenes - and costumes are definitely encouraged. The movie is shown annually in Birmingham at venues like Alabama Theatre, Sloss, and Boutwell Auditorium.
Take in the Views from The Vulcan
The god of fire and forge had proudly looked over our city for nearly a century now, with his home on Red Mountain allowing the bare-bummed deity to cover every corner of Birmingham. The surrounding Vulcan Park and Museum is an entertaining experience for the whole family and provides the opportunity to climb (or ride an elevator) up our stone-cold hero to take in these views for yourself. Yes, it’s a little high up but the view is incredible.
These are just a few of the magnificent moments that can happen in Birmingham. What’s on your bucket list?
