Studying is one of the most important tools humans have that can’t be seen. Focusing our brain to absorb new information can help us build new machines, learn more about our world and the creatures that call it home, and pass with a 70 on a really hard chemistry class. It is something that most everyone would say they wish they were good at, but fewer hands would rise to show how many felt confident with their current study strategy. Fortunately, that can be changed. Study these few tips and take your knowledge absorption game to the next level.

Set the Environment

Studying requires you to shed the distractions of this world and focus on one thing for an extended period of time - a tough thing to do in 2022! But everyone has their spaces and settings that enable them to become the best version of their studying selves. Location is an important factor to consider - do you need to be in a desk setting or enjoy something more comfortable? Is a public place like a library a good way to get out of the room or is it a bit too distracting? Whatever answers you find best suit your preferences are the right ones.

Sound - or lack thereof - is another important factor to take into consideration. Maybe you like Lo-Fi beats, jazz, or maybe you like heavy metal. “Two Weeks” by FKA Twigs to calm the brain down or “Hip Hop” by Dead Prez to hype yourself up? These are pieces of knowledge that only you hold answers to - and they will help you gather even more wisdom! If you think the need for food or a drink could distract you during your study sesh - just plan ahead and bring the right resources for your unique palette.

Take Breaks

There are two benefits to taking breaks during a designated study session. First, you get to take a break from your designated study session! This means you can turn your brain off - even if it’s only momentarily - and be your cool and casual self again. Enjoy it, soak it up, cause it’s almost time to get back to studying! The second benefit is the focus that comes when you set a certain amount of time aside to strictly be responsible and get things accomplished. Try studying for 20-minute intervals with no distractions, then reward yourself with a couple of minutes to yourself. If that’s not long enough, extend it to 30 minutes. Find the best fit for you and learn some things.

Write Things Down

Repetition and writing are two essential practices to consider when undertaking a large studying task. Taking time to write out definitions, equations, phrases, notes, or whatever you need on index cards to review is a great way to have your brain spend more time focusing on the material. Highlighting and underlining important sections of notes can be just as impactful, along with a thousand other techniques that accomplish the same goal. Find what works best for you, and enjoy the process.

These are just a few of the little practices that can go a long way in improving your habits - now aren’t you supposed to be studying??
